In-Home vs. Legal Test Results
Patients who are considering their paternity testing options sometimes ask us if the test results produced from in-home DNA testing are as accurate as the results produced from legal testing.
As long as the DNA samples were collected from the right people, there should be no difference between the results of an in-home test and a legal test. In other words, the actual test result—inclusion or exclusion—will be the same no matter which type of paternity test you take. Beta Paternity performs all its DNA tests twice to make sure the results are always 100% accurate.
However, in-home testing does not follow the chain of custody procedure required in legal testing. Therefore, the result report of an in-home paternity test will be different from the report of a legal test in these ways:
- A legal test report will list the tested parties’ full names, while an in-home test report will only list the tested parties’ roles (mother, alleged father, child) as specified in the samples you send us. In an in-home test, the patients collect their own samples. Because we cannot verify who truly contributed the samples, we cannot list names on the report.
- The result report of an in-home test will not be notarized. This means it may not be admissible in courts of law. If you need a paternity test for any legal purpose, we highly recommend you undergo legal testing with our sister company, DNA Diagnostics Center (DDC).
