If you need a paternity test to confirm who the father of your child is, and you have more than one possible father to test, Beta Paternity can help.

You have two main options in this situation.

1. Test both alleged fathers. You can collect DNA samples from both alleged fathers and test them against the child. The samples do not have to be collected at the same time, but please let us know that there is an additional alleged father when you order a paternity test. We will send you a kit that includes swabs for the additional party. This way, our laboratory can test both alleged fathers as soon as samples from all tested parties arrive at the laboratory.

2. Test one alleged father against the child. Take a second paternity test if needed. Your second option is to test one alleged father against the child at a time. If the first tested man is excluded as the father (as indicated by a 0% probability of paternity), you can order a second paternity test with a different possible father.

With the first option, you will need to pay the regular test fee plus $150 for the additional alleged father. With the second option, you will need to pay the regular fee for each test you order.

Please note: If the alleged fathers are related as full brothers, half brothers, or father and son, you must let us know when ordering your test, regardless of which option you choose. Men who are closely related will have similar DNA profiles, so we will need to perform extended testing to ensure that the results we report are accurate and conclusive.

Patients often ask us if there is a minimum age for DNA testing. The quick answer to this question is no, there isn’t.

A person’s DNA is established when conception occurs—when the egg cell is fertilized by the sperm cell. From this point on, the individual’s DNA generally does not change.

Because of this fact, paternity testing is possible even before birth. Beta Paternity can often perform prenatal paternity testing if the mother is between 10 and 24 weeks pregnant. The prenatal sample is collected by an OB-GYN through either chorionic villi sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis. The mother and alleged father collect their own samples using the buccal swab technique. Because the baby’s DNA will not change after birth, a prenatal paternity test produces results that are just as reliable as those of a standard paternity test.

When prenatal testing is not an option, a paternity test can be performed with a newborn baby. Buccal swabbing is a fast and painless sample collection procedure, and it can be done safely on a baby immediately after delivery.
